The Best Neighborhoods in Detroit

Detroit, Michigan has its share of excellent neighborhoods like any other state in the nation. In fact, as a result of real estate issues stemming from the financial crisis a few years back, you could secure a great house at a considerably lower price today. If you’re in the process of moving to Detroit – or at least considering it – then you should be apprised of the following selection of great neighborhoods.

Sherwood Forest

With a population that hovers around 2,000 people, 435 houses and the scenic boundaries of Parkside, Livernois, Pembroke and Seven Mile Road,Sherwood Forest is like a quaint village with high-quality homes and exceptional curb appeal. The trees all take on characteristic cinnamon hues as fall approaches, making for an especially beautiful display along the quiet, winding streets. It’s just 20 minutes from Downtown Detroit, and has homes priced between about $150,000 and half-a-million dollars.

Palmer Woods District

Palmer Woods is a residential district that’s characterized by suburban streetscapes; if an out-of-towner wanted to know what a neighborhood with old money looks like, you’d show them a picture of the well-kept avenues. With 295 homes on about 190 acres of pristine land, Palmer Woods is home to many well-to-do Detroit professionals. The half-million dollar homes are perfectly situated to have easy access to plenty of restaurants, bars and nightclubs. The neighborhood, itself, is very safe and has private security.

Corktown

Slightly west of Downtown Detroit, this historic neighborhood is where old money resides. As you would expect, it is very family-oriented with excellent housing, a diverse community and a nightlife comparable to any upbeat district. The population of about 3,000 resides on 50 acres of Late Victorian and Colonial Revival architecture. You’ll love the mac & cheese at Slows Bar BQ, and the fried chicken at Gold Cash Gold. Eastern Market has many popular eateries, and breakfast is always served delicious at Astro Coffee cafe. For a tour of history, you can always visit Corktown’s Michigan Central Station.

Woodbridge

Woodbridge is another highly-rated Detroit residential neighborhood, and is bounded by Downtown Detroit, Midtown, Corktown and New Center. Most of the homes are distinctly Victorian. There are plenty of townhouses for incoming residents, and Woodbridge is currently considered a hotbed of urban revitalization.

Lafayette Park

This residential neighborhood is also, similarly to Woodbridge, known as a bit of an urban renewal project. Sitting of 46 acres of land, Lafayette Park is designated as a National Historic Landmark. It is located east of Downtown Detroit, and contains such frequently-visited restaurants as Bai Mai Thai, the Thomas Magee’s Sporting bar and the Urban Soul Restaurant. In addition to townhomes, there are three major apartment complexes in Lafayette Park, which is also famous for the architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Compared to other Detroit neighborhoods, Lafayette has a large population in excess of 5,000 people.

Midtown Detroit

Midtown, Detroit is actually a cluster of residential neighborhoods, with a commercial district, university and cultural center mixed in. Most people from other parts of Motor City refer to it as a single large neighborhood with a population in excess of 14,000 people. The selection of eateries include Cass Cafe, Alley Taco, Selden Standard and HopCat. Midtown is comprised of over a dozen districts – including Woodbridge up above.
