Palmer Moving & Storage is much more than a moving company. We are also dedicated community partners that strive to help local charities grow and give back to others. Move for Hunger
When moving day rolls around, many families choose to donate or discard food items rather than haul them to a new home. Move for Hunger is an organization that works with moving companies to collect non-perishable food items and distribute them to food banks and families in need. Since originally partnering with Move for Hunger in 2011, northAmerican moving services agents have donated and distributed over 149,000 pounds of food. Without the efforts of movers, families, and community organizations, much of this food would have likely ended up in landfill. Instead, donated food is making it onto the dinner tables of families; these efforts are helping to combat food insecurity across North America. Palmer Moving & Storage advances these efforts locally by collecting donated food on moving day and bringing it back to the warehouse for eventual distribution to Gleaners Food Bank who gets the foods directly to those in need..
Joan Rose Foundation
Palmer Moving & Storage is a proud contributor to the Joan Rose Foundation, an organization that provides education and community development services in Haiti to help nourish the potential of every child. Each day, the foundation provides services to over 100 children and young adults, which include literacy, English, and math courses; a free lunch of chicken, beans, and rice; supervised playtime; and donations of clothing and shoes. Providing these types of services directly to children gives them the opportunity to break the cycle of poverty and improve their own lives and the lives of their families.
Special Spaces is an organization near and dear to our hearts at Palmer Moving & Storage. Not only are we proud donors to this cause, one of our employees and his wife help to run the local chapter of Special Spaces. The purpose of this organization is to help children battling a life-threatening illness by giving them a special place to heal, rest, and find peace. Volunteers and sponsors come together to create dream bedrooms for these brave children, giving them a space to find magic, inspiration, and comfort while they do the vital work of healing and recovering.
Food insecurity and food waste have become major concerns for the developed world. Forgotten Harvestfights back against hunger and waste by collecting surplus, prepared, and perishable food items from grocery stores, restaurants, farmers, wholesale distributors, and other Health Department-approved sources. Surplus food is then delivered to emergency food providers such as soup kitchens, food banks, shelters, and senior centers. Last year alone, Forgotten Harvest saved 40.9 million pounds of food from going to waste in the Detroit Metro area. Palmer Moving & Storage supports this organization through both donations and direct volunteering.
Gary Sinise Foundation
America’s veterans, first responders, defenders, and their families are the backbone of this nation and deserve the full support of their communities. The Gary Sinise Foundationassists these honored community members through a variety of programs that aim to educate, inspire, entertain, and strengthen communities. One branch of the Gary Sinise Foundation, the Restoring Independence Supporting Empowerment (R.I.S.E.) program, works towards these goals by building custom “smart homes” for wounded veterans and their families across the country. So far, over 33 homes have either been started or completed by R.I.S.E. and more are on the books for the coming years. Palmer Moving & Storage assists the Gary Sinise Foundation by providing services with our line of moving vans.
Habitat for Humanity
Habitat for Humanity is a well-known organization that works to improve the quality of housing worldwide. Habitat ReStore is a branch of Habitat for Humanity that sells donated furniture, building supplies, household goods, and other items that may otherwise have been discarded. In June of 2014, Habitat for Humanity partnered with northAmerican Moving Services to become the only national donation program linking Habitat ReStore outlets and moving companies. Through this partnership, moving companies collect unwanted items directly from customers and transport them to a local Habitat ReStore to support the organizations mission of rebuilding homes and strengthening communities.
Festival of Trees
The holidays are a time for family, gratitude, and giving to others. Festival of Trees is an organization that supports pediatric research through the sales of holiday trees and wreaths. Each year, the organization creates stunning displays of professionally designed 7’ and 4’ holiday trees, wreaths, and other holiday gift items. These items are sold to the public and proceeds are used to support medical research at the Children’s Hospital of Michigan. To support this vital research, Palmer Moving & Storage volunteers time, labor, and moving services to help with the transportation of holiday items.
